5 and 6 S

Our History topic this half term is Pharaohs. We will be learning about life in Ancient Egypt and the rulers during this period of history.

English:

In English, we will start the term by exploring poetry before moving on to journalistic writing. The children will be able to look at example texts before planning and writing their own. They will be encouraged to edit and improve their work as they go along learning that true authors write many drafts before their final mater pieces. The children will have opportunities to recap their prior knowledge and we will regularly refer to our grammar and punctuation skills to allow us to use more ambitious vocabulary and more complex sentence choices..

Love to Read:

Our text this term will be Secrets of the Sun King. It is an amazing mystery story; I know you will all love it!

Maths:

This term, we will be consolidating our knowledge on place value using pictorial images, models and abstract representation to deepen and develop our understanding. We will use place value charts and bar models to ensure our knowledge and skills are secure and help us ‘lock in’ our understanding to solve real life problems. Later on in the half term, we will move on to addition and subtraction before exploring multiplication and division. We will continue to practise our multiplication skills daily as we understand this is the foundation for key concepts in maths that will be taught later on in the year such as fractions, factors and multiples.

Science:

In Science, we will be working scientifically to explore different materials. The children will be able to work in groups to carry out a number of experiments where they will be able to explore the different properties of shapes using Venn diagrams to classify and group objects.

RE:

This term, we will be deepening our understanding of the theory of creation and cosmology. The children will learn about the opposing beliefs and views whilst recapping their understanding of the creation story. Once they have consolidated this, they will discover the theory of cosmology and
