Hi Team Wrockers!
Our friend, Mrs Mee, of The STEM Workshop (year 6 pupils will no doubt remember their workshops with her last year), has created a series of fantastic STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) videos and activities which she will be sharing through her virtual classroom on Kids You Tube. We have so many budding scientists, coders, engineers and mathematicians at WWJS which these practical activities would be perfect for!
Here’s what she has told us about them:
You Tube Tutorials
I have created a range of short focussed activities (as tutorials) that the children can get involved in using materials that you can find in and around the home.
The tutorials are all linked to the STEM curriculum.
The tutorials I have created so far focus on: Computer Aided Design, Mechanisms (joining materials and components to explore movement) and structures. They can be followed step by step, but I would encourage them to explore and experiment with size and materials etc.
I am adding a new tutorial every Monday, I am working to create ones that can be carried out at home, but equally going to add other more advanced ones to support staff for planning for future curriculum. It would be wonderful if the children or staff want to share ideas with me of what type of products or themes they would like to see and I will happily mention and credit them for their idea. I am using this time to support where I can so please do reach out.
Every month I am planning on setting a challenge with a prize attached just to make it a little more engaging.
This month’s challenge is to design and make the tallest freestanding structure, details of this can be found on The STEM Workshop, You Tube Channel.
The children will find the challenge, the criteria and date the entry needs to be submitted.
Entries to be submitted as either a photo or a video
Date of submission – Friday 29th May
Winner Announced – Monday 1st June
You Tube Channel – https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5LL4_akNrPr2fKT6EGCuBw?view_as=subscriber
I would absolutely love to see pictures or videos of any of their creations that they may have a go at.
What a fantastic opportunity for Team Wrockers! If you do choose to take part in the tallest freestanding tower challenge or any of the other activities, we would love for you to share photos on Dojo too.
Have fun exploring and creating!
